The Geodata for Agriculture and Water (G4AW) Facility is a programme of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs which is executed by the Netherlands Space Office (NSO). G4AW focuses on improved and increased sustainable food production and more efficient use of water in agriculture. In Summer 2014 four out of twelve project proposals have been granted a subsidy.
The G4AW Facility aims at helping the formation of public private partnerships and supporting initiatives of these partnerships to set up large-scale, demand-driven, and user-tailored satellite-based service chains. These partnerships may include satellite and geo data providers, telecom providers, IT companies, agrometeorologists, research institutes, NGO’s, extension workers, consultancies, governmental organisations, capacity building organisations, insurance and financing companies, producers of farming input (fertilizers, seeds, etc.).
The ultimate goal is to provide smallholder food producers (farmers, livestock farmers, fishermen/women) in 26 G4AW partner countries with information leading to improvement in sustainable food production and/or improved efficiency in use of inputs for food production (water, fertilizer, seeds, pesticides, etc.) and/or improved income. Partner countries include: Angola, Bangladesh, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Colombia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Indonesia, Kenya, Laos, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Myanmar, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Vietnam, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
On 11 September the second call of the Geodata for Agriculture and Water (G4AW) programme was launched in The Hague.
